Summary 2006- Sports Climbing

The following camps were organised during the year to improve the climbing skill of Indian climbers:

(1) Climbers’ Training Camp in May & July 2006

Two Climbers Training Camps were organised at IMF from 9 to 23 May 06 and 20 to 26 Jul 06 respectively. 17 climbers participated in each camp. The young participants were selected based on recommendations from their respective zones. The main focus on training was to improve different type of climbing skills required by a top grade climber, i.e. stretching, power, endurance, stamina, on-sight and speed climbing and Bouldering with the help of available facilities.

(2) Orientation Course for Judges & Route Setters

Orientation Course for Judges & Route Setters was organised from 9 to 11 May 06 in which the changes introduced in the Rules during the past 8 years were explained to the participants by the recently qualified and knowledgeable faculty.

(3) Opening-up of Sport Climbing facility to local Schools as a coordinated activity

Two days' Introductory Training Capsules have been introduced for local Schools. More than 55 students from different local Schools have undergone Introductory Training Capsules.

(4) Climbing Competition

12 th National Sport Climbing Competition is planned to be held from 4 to 7 Nov 06 at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. Approx 150 participants selected in respective Zonal Competitions, from five Zones would participate in this competition.

(5) Continental Judges & Judges Course

Continental Judges Course was held at Malaysia from 17 to 20 June 06. Shri Prakash Kelshekar was selected and detailed by IMF as its only official candidate for attending this Course. He has secured 68% marks on this course.

ACC had planned two courses for Route Setters, i.e. first course from 12 to 16 Jun and the 2 nd from 19 to 23 Jun 06 respectively. Shri Vaibhav Mehta, who was selected by the IMF, had confirmed his willingness to attend first Route Setter Course from 12 to 16 Jun 06. However, due to less participation, the Route Setter Course was combined and rescheduled from 19 to 23 Jun 06. Shri Mehta could not attend the Course as he had already planned his visit to France during the rescheduled dates of the Course.
